Saturday Matinee

On Saturday morning I would ask mum,
any errands to be run?
Then I would go and ask Dad,
any pocket money to be had?
I would also wander near and far,
looking for the odd jam jar
And having collected the required cash,
off to the cinema I would dash.

First a stop at Moore's sweetshop
for bubble gum and sherbet dab.
I'd keep enough for a lolly ice
and spend what's left on sticky ice.
Then into the flicks where I'd take my seat,
looking forward to this weeks treat.
Bugs Bunny first, then Mickey Mouse,
then Tom and Jerry would wreck their house.

Next came a western starring Hop along,
or maybe Roy Rogers singing a song.
A four-legged friend was one of his best,
the King of the cowboys, taming the west.
Then came the serial and in the last episode
did Flash Gordon's spaceship really explode?

After the interval, with lights turned down low,
we'd watch the main feature, Abbot and Costello,
Or maybe Heidi or Lassie Come Home,
but whatever it was we didn't moan
For a tanner we'd had three hours of fun
and we couldn't wait for next Saturday to come.
We had so much pleasure, my mates and me,
every week at the Saturday matinee.
