On the Radio By Dave Tollerton

I heard it on the radio, because we didn't have a T.V.
I heard it on the radio, my imagination and me.
The words they painted pictures as skillfully as an artists brush
And when listening to Saturday night theatre, Dad always demanded hush.

Archie Andrews, he was funny in everything he did
And no one got into more trouble than Jimmy, the Clitheroe Kid.
Jimmy Edwards played the chaperone to those who loved birds, Eth and Ron
And Living Life With the Lyons was complete fun.
Al Read spoke to our daily lot, Ted Ray was smart and snappy,
Hancock got into water, hot, and the Goons they were just zany.
Serials were tension packed and played at a hectic pace,
The action it was thick and fast, remember Journey into Space.

Paul Temple, he was smooth and suave, Dick Barton, tough as a rock,
Catching many a criminal with help from Snowy and Jock.
The Archers down in Ambridge brought us a farmers life
And each day there was a Diary of Mrs Dale, the doctors wife.

Friday night was music night, John Hanson may be a guest
Saturday morning was for the youngsters, playing their requests.
Alma Cogan, Frankie Vaughan Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson,
Lita Rosa, Ruby Murray, Michael Holiday and Ann Shelton.

Sports report at five o' clock was eagerly awaited,
While dad checked his pools Coupon, we sat quiet with bread baited.
Two-way Family Favorites was a must with Sunday lunch,
Jean Metcalfe helping loved ones and servicemen keep in touch.

Cold meats and pickle at tea time was mostly kept informal
Whilst listening to the Mike Sammes Singers, Singing Something Simple.
Sunday night was really grand and preparations thorough,
For a concert by Max Jaffa the Palm Court in Scarborough.

This golden age of radio had something for everyone
From Workers Playtime to Top of the Form, The Stargazers and Ray Ellington.
From the radio came comedy, excitement and song
A world of entertainment for one so young.
